HISTORY AND MISSION OF JARVIS HOOKER LIBRARY
Jarvis Memorial has benefited from a library beginning in the early 1900’s. Many church members have given years of service building the current collection of over 8000 items. During the 1960’s, Lois Patterson began a long journey for the future of the Christian Education collection at Jarvis and in 1980 the library and music suite was opened. During 1977, the Administrative Council approved Jarvis library to be named ‘Hooker Library’ in memory of Seth Tyson Hooker and Lillie Peebles Hooker who were lifelong members of Jarvis in the early 1900’s. Their son, William Howard Hooker was an active financial contributor to the Jarvis library collection before 1986 when the library was added to the church budget. In 1985, Rev. Jim Bailey and the Administrative Council accepted a continuous trust from Wm H. Hooker to maintain our church library collection. As a Bibliophile, Mr. Hooker also left monies to other libraries in our community such as ECU and Sheppard. The recent renovations to the library were made available through the Hooker Family Trust which began in 1995 and will provide for the mission of Jarvis Library to continue.
The ministry of the church library of Jarvis Memorial is to encourage and enrich Christian growth by providing a library program within the church, with reference materials, program resources and appropriate reading materials for all ages, and to extend the use of these resources to other churches and individuals within the Greenville area. Jarvis Hooker Library is bursting at the seams and our shelves are full. We invite and welcome you to visit and enjoy this wonderful library!
